Painting a portrait

Writer's picture: JaneJane

In this weeks drop-in classes we focused on drawing the portrait. Drawing with soft pencils on a smooth surface can be very rewarding but it can also teach you a lot before you get the paints out.

Working with light and dark areas are crucial when painting a portrait and this aspect has to be tackled when you are only using a pencil. We discussed the 'two' types of drawing; a drawing for its own sake and a preparatory drawing for a painting.

Whatever you end up using whether it is pencil or paint, it will involve a large degree of drawing and whatever stage you are at, you can never do enough drawing. TIP: be observant, don't trust what you think you see, try to analyse a line, an area of shading etc. If you are vigilant you will be able to assess, revise and move forward with your portrait. Simple! :)
